Expanding Economic Opportunities Southern California can continue sustainable economic growth and protect its environment through planned development that does not fragment and pollute the region. Travel and tourism are a major component of our economy especially in the counties of San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo, and Imperial. The California Desert is one of the top outdoor recreation spots in the continental United States with 6.7 million recreation visitor days reported to its national parks and wilderness areas and $230 million spent annually. Protecting our deserts and our way of life is also protecting our economy. Read the Full Story
A Future Built Around Both Clean Energy and Conservation As Teddy Roosevelt so fervently believed we as Americans have a responsibility to be good stewards of our environment.  Renewable energy is the future for both Southern California and our nation. The clean energy economy will provide jobs and foster the protection of our climate and natural resources.  But care must be taken to locate energy projects in appropriate places where little harm will be done to desert ecosystems, scenic vistas and sensitive wildlife habitat. A Legacy in Trouble As veterans and residents of Southern California it is our duty to protect our homestead. The part of the region we call home known as the California desert has a deep and distinct heritage that comprises a legacy not only for us but our entire nation. It boasts glorious mountain streams, historic trails, hidden oases, and diverse lands that allow wildlife such as bighorn sheep to thrive in an environment that has remained relatively unchanged for thousands of years. This beauty and diversity is in danger of being sacrificed if we do not stand together and take action.   Read the Full Story

How Can You Help?

soldierkidWhether you are a veteran, family member of a veteran or a concerned citizen that cares about increasing opportunities for recreation and tourism for the local economy, safeguarding clean water, or protecting endangered wildlife, we all have a stake in this issue. Please take a moment to thank those leaders who have already expressed their support for stewardship of the California desert and to urge others to do the same.

The Protection of Desert Lands

The Vet Voice Foundation is a non-partisan, non-profit organization committed to mobilizing Veterans' voices through grassroots channels.

The issue we want to share affects you as well as your quality of life as both a veteran and resident of Southern California: the protection of the desert lands in this part of the country. This region has a deep and distinct heritage that comprises a legacy not only for its residents but our entire nation. It boasts glorious mountain streams, historic trails, and diverse lands that allow wildlife, such as bighorn sheep, to thrive in an environment that has remained relatively unchanged for thousands of years. It includes the famous Route 66, which serves as a magnet for tourists wanting to experience California's pioneering past. The area also provides economic lifeblood for the region through tourism as more and more Americans from all over the country discover the serenity of national parks such as Joshua Tree and Death Valley.

However, the beauty of this area is being jeopardized by two of the fastest growing regions in the United States: Southern California and Las Vegas. While there is a definitive need to continue economic growth and prosperity in the region, it can be attained without hindering the region's aesthetic beauty and recreational and tourism opportunities.

All Southern California residents have a stake in protecting the economic interests of the tourism industry, safeguarding and ensuring clean water, and protecting wildlife. As veterans committed to the protection of our nation, many of us feel strongly about preserving it, as well. We encourage you to join us as we mobilize to protect your lands and community. We look forward to serving you on not only this issue but also others that will arise as our mission continues.
